You Gigant. You golf, too.

Gigant has been watching the humans for a long time.

When the humans first arrived, Gigant hid and watched them from behind a forest. Gigant was embarrassed about this and found it too awkward to do introductions on subsequent encounters. Gigant remained hidden.

Now there are humans everywhere. The water is stinky and the fish are all gone. The humans must be eating something though! Hungry, Gigant resolved to meet the humans.

Help Gigant learn to live with the humans by playing their weird game of 'Golf'.

Sure, but what is this?

Gigant Golf is a Game Boy (DMG) game, made for GB Compo 2023.

It's kind of like Rampage + a Golf Sim (choose one, they are literally all identical). It was made in a hurry by someone with no experience writing Game Boy games in assembly, so some of the Rampage parts are missing, and also some of the Golf Sim parts are missing. You can drop a big rock on some little houses though.

  • This game features <0> sound effects
  • Warning: all collisions are simulated... poorly.
  • Made for GB Compo 2023
  • Written in assembly (RGBASM)
  • Maps built in Tiled
  • This project is free software (GPL). The code is in this Github repo.

Install instructions

It's a Game Boy ROM (.gb). Play it in a Game Boy emulator or on a Game Boy via a flash cart or some witchcraft. I've tested it on a Game Boy Color and a Game Boy Pocket and I lived to tell the tale (the Game Boys are fine, too) but you're on your own, obviously.

I've got a real soft spot for retro golf games and this one shows loads of promise. The premise and central mechanic of trying to chip boulders onto peoples houses is such a great spin on a 2D golf game!

The check as to whether the boulder should keep rolling seems a little slow. And some more feedback/game feel such as music, SFX and a view shake for when the giant hits the ball and a house is demolished will go a long way.

But seriously, you should keep developing this! It's really got a fantastic foundation.

Well done!

Hey, thanks! The issues you noticed -- particularly the boulder (not) rolling -- were the major things I wanted to fix before running out of time.

Thanks for checking it out!
